Etcher copies an image byte for byte. Use it for images whose publisher supports that writing method, such as a suitable Linux or appliance image.

Windows installer images need additional preparation and do not work out of the box with Etcher’s raw-copy approach. Use Microsoft’s media workflow or Rufus for a Windows installation USB.

Separate image verification, writing and boot testing

Obtain the image and its verification instructions from its publisher. Confirm the target model and capacity before a destructive write, then inspect the write result and test booting only to a safe stopping point.

Write validation cannot authenticate the source image or guarantee firmware compatibility. Etcher also does not configure a persistent live-storage area; choose a tool documented for persistence when that is required.
