Distinguish application flags from setup flags

ShareX’s application -silent option starts it in the tray. The setup program’s /SILENT and /VERYSILENT options instead affect its wizard; /NORUN prevents setup from launching the app afterward.

These are different executables and behaviors. Passing a bare file path to ShareX is documented as an upload action, so do not use that syntax as a local image-viewing example.

Prepare capture-only work before going offline

Check the after-capture workflow, output folder and OCR language list using a non-confidential sample. Install required Windows OCR language support while connected, then reopen the OCR window to confirm its language is available.

The publisher documents a bundled .NET 9 runtime, but language data and recording helpers are separate considerations. The exact 21.0.0 source targets newer Windows APIs; test compatibility on the actual Windows build rather than inferring it from x64 alone.

What ShareX does

ShareX 21.0.0 is an open-source Windows capture and workflow tool with separate x64 installer and portable ZIP assets. The installer uses normal Windows setup. The portable archive can keep ShareX configuration and images in a ShareX folder beside the executable, while its sandbox option intentionally saves no settings and is not an operating-system isolation boundary; operating-system, clipboard, temporary-file, antivirus, and destination traces can still exist.

Capturing, annotating, copying, hashing, and saving to a local folder are local operations. Upload tasks, URL shorteners, destination history, and service integrations transmit selected files or metadata to the configured third party. Automatic upload is disabled by default for new installations according to the 19.0.1 change carried into this release series. Still review existing or imported after-capture and upload tasks before handling confidential screens. A blur or pixelation annotation may be reversible or insufficient depending on how the output is produced; use destructive redaction and inspect the final exported pixels when secrecy matters.

OCR uses Windows OCR capabilities and installed language support; results depend on language packs, resolution, layout, and image quality. Screen recording can require FFmpeg-related components and access to audio/capture APIs. Third-party upload destinations, tools, and custom actions have their own credentials, availability, retention, and trust boundaries.
