What Inkscape does

Inkscape 1.4.4 is a GPL-licensed vector editor for Windows, macOS and Linux. This record provides one Windows x64 MSI and the versioned publisher page for other packages. The Windows MSI is not a macOS or Linux installer; follow the relevant platform's package and dependency instructions. The release page identifies 1.4.4 as a maintenance release published on 6 May 2026.

Use SVG as the working format and check exported artwork in the viewer or print workflow that will receive it. Paths scale independently of raster pixels, but embedded images, fonts and filter effects can still affect output. PDF, EPS and DXF import/export should be checked with representative files, especially when external dependencies or unsupported constructs are involved.

For multipage documents, 1.4.4 is a bridge between the older Inkscape page format and the format planned for 1.5. The publisher states that releases before 1.4.3 cannot interpret the new page format. The publisher also documents a specific macOS limitation: extensions and some Python-based import/export formats do not work when the official DMG application is started from the command line. This restriction follows a security change, so do not disable protections to force an extension to run. The release page also records Wayland issues when moving or closing docked dialogs. No local installation, signature inspection, extension execution or rendering comparison was performed.

Try a practical task

Create a simple vector label and export a PNG

Build a small label from your own rectangle and text, then keep an SVG master alongside a raster export.

Before you start

Use a new document and a short invented label such as Sample kit.
Choose a font available on the machine that will edit the SVG.

Draw the base

Use the Rectangle tool to draw the label background. Set a fill colour and a clearly visible stroke or no stroke deliberately.
Add the text

Use the Text tool to enter Sample kit. Select the text and rectangle together, then use Align and Distribute to place the text within the label.
Save the vector master

Save as SVG. Keep text editable if this is your master; font availability can affect appearance on another computer.
Export a raster copy

Open the Export panel, choose the intended page or selection and export a PNG at a stated pixel width. Reopen it to check the bounds and text.

Expected result

The SVG remains editable and the PNG contains the intended label without clipping or a large unintended margin.

If the result is different

The PNG contains too much blank space: Check whether the export area is Page, Drawing or Selection before exporting again.
The text changes on another machine: Check font availability. Preserve the editable master before making an outlined copy for a specific sharing workflow.

SVG preserves vector shapes; PNG has fixed pixels. Exporting a larger PNG does not change the editable document’s purpose or guarantee print suitability.
