Download summary

Paint.NET is a graphics app for Windows, published by dotPDN LLC. A direct package URL is recorded below. The host may be the publisher, a release repository, a CDN, or another distribution source documented by the publisher. Some packages still fetch optional components during setup. The recorded publisher site is paint.net. We do not host or modify installer files.

Sources and identity

External references used to identify the product and publisher. These links do not prove that we installed the package.

Publisher documentation

These references support the package and behavior notes. Documentation checks are separate from the recorded URL-check date and do not represent an installation test.

Choose a package

Classic installer ZIP or portable ZIP

Use the installer archive for setup-based installation; run its contained installer after checking the package. The portable archive contains the runnable application instead.

The web installer is a different download. The included .NET runtime does not remove the need for a compatible Windows version, CPU and drivers.

Free Classic or paid Store edition

Classic is free for personal and commercial use. Choose the paid Store edition if Store-managed automatic updates suit your environment.

The application is not open source. Plug-ins have separate authors and licences, and a portable deployment needs an explicit update plan.

Package guidance is based on the linked documentation, checked 11 September 2026. No installation test is claimed.

Publisher SHA-256 reference values

Matched the two exact asset SHA-256 digests in official release metadata. No downloaded-byte or signature check. Compared on 11 September 2026 with the publisher’s reference.

Compare only with the exact named package. A matching hash alone does not establish publisher identity or package safety.

Verification scope

A direct package URL is recorded above. We have not independently installed every listed build or confirmed that setup remains fully offline.

We do not host software files. Links may resolve to a publisher domain, its release repository, app store, CDN, or a documented distribution host — confirm the final hostname, publisher signature, version, and architecture before deployment. Recorded URLs last checked 11 September 2026; content last updated 11 September 2026.

What Paint.NET does

Paint.NET 5.1.12 is dotPDN's Windows image editor. The Classic edition is free to use, including commercially; the Microsoft Store edition is paid. The publisher describes the functionality as the same apart from fully automatic Store updating. This is proprietary software: the GitHub release repository distributes packages and is not an open-source licence for the application.

The primary x64 Classic installer ZIP must be opened to run its contained setup program. The separately listed portable ZIP contains the application instead. Choose an installer for normal installed use, or the portable bundle when you want to manage an extracted copy and its updates. A portable copy can still create settings, recent-file information and editing-history files; it is not a promise of trace-free operation.

The documented OS baseline is Windows 10 version 21H2, Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022 on a 64-bit CPU. The application includes its required.NET runtime, so it does not require a separately staged.NET installer. The publisher's supported hardware baseline includes AVX2 for Intel/AMD CPUs, a Direct3D 11 GPU and an SSD, while documenting slower fallback behavior on some older hardware.

Keep a PDN working file when layers matter and export a separate delivery image. Third-party effect and file-type plug-ins have their own compatibility and permission requirements; obtain them through the publisher's forum or the authors' linked sources. The two SHA-256 references match official release metadata checked on 11 September 2026. No setup execution, signature inspection, plug-in test or performance measurement was performed.

Product features

  • Layers with blend modes; undo history uses disk space

  • Classic installer, MSI, Store, web-installer, and portable deployment choices

Installation notes

Grouped by the package types recorded on this page — not a claim that every listed build was independently tested on every supported platform.

Windows Windows archive (ZIP/7Z)

  1. 1

Extract the recorded file (paint.net.5.1.12.install.x64.zip) into a separate folder and check the publisher's instructions for the executable or setup program inside. ZIP/7Z describes compression, not installation behavior.

  2. 2

A no-installer build may still store settings, credentials, caches, or Registry entries outside that folder. Check Paint.NET's configuration and removal instructions before moving or deleting it.
