Choose a package

Choose history transfer during the linking flow

After selecting the package for the desktop architecture, plan the separate QR-code linking step with the registered primary device. Decide whether to transfer message history during that flow; installing the file alone does not copy conversations.

Signal documents transfer of chats and the last 45 days of media. Choosing not to transfer and changing that choice later requires reinstalling and linking again. Preserve needed data and review the current instructions before doing that; no account was linked or reinstalled here.

Plan reconnection for a rarely used desktop

Use the primary device’s Linked devices list to review which computers should remain connected. Signal currently requires the primary phone to come online at least once every 30 days, and unlinks a linked device after 45 days of inactivity.

Keep the registered primary device available for relinking. A staged installer does not preserve a device link indefinitely or provide offline message delivery.

What Signal Desktop does

Signal Desktop is the Windows, macOS, and Linux companion client for the Signal messaging service. It must link to an existing Signal account, and account linking, message delivery, calls, synchronization, and updates require Signal's service and network access. The desktop package is not a standalone or offline communication system.

Signal documents end-to-end encryption for supported message and call content through the Signal Protocol. That design does not protect a compromised endpoint, an unlocked screen, notification previews, content a recipient exports, operating-system telemetry, or every category of service metadata. Disappearing messages reduce retained chat history but cannot guarantee removal from screenshots, notifications, malware, backups outside Signal's control, or a recipient's separate copy.

This record pins Signal Desktop 8.25.0 Windows x64 and ARM64 installers, a universal macOS DMG plus architecture-specific ZIPs, and the AMD64 Debian package. Signal's official update manifests identify the desktop version, filenames, sizes, and publisher-supplied SHA-512 values; this catalog does not relabel those values as SHA-256. The Linux DEB is a package-manager artifact and has separate repository trust behavior. This audit did not verify OS code signatures, install or link the clients, or test update behavior.
