What Shotcut does
Shotcut 26.8.1 is Meltytech's GPL-licensed editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The recorded files are the x64 Windows installer/ZIP, universal macOS DMG and Linux x86-64 AppImage. The current download page requires Windows 10 build 1809 or newer and macOS 12 or newer. A Windows ARM build is separate. Package availability does not imply identical capture APIs, hardware acceleration, plug-in support, codecs, or performance on every platform.
Shotcut uses FFmpeg/MLT components for broad media support, but supported containers, codecs, profiles, pixel formats, metadata, and hardware paths depend on the exact build. Opening a file without preprocessing does not guarantee smooth native editing; proxies, preview scaling, or conversion may be needed. Preserve originals and test frame rate, color/HDR, rotation, audio layout, subtitles, and timecode before committing a project.
4K editing and export are workload descriptions, not hardware guarantees. Timeline complexity, effects, source codecs, storage speed, RAM, proxy settings, preview resolution, drivers, and selected encoder determine responsiveness and output time. GPU decoding/encoding and filters cover only supported paths; some operations remain CPU-bound.
Shotcut does not require online activation or a subscription check. Help links, updates and network-hosted media still use a connection when accessed. The application does not add an export watermark; source media, fonts and other added assets have their own licence terms. The SHA-256 values below are official release-asset digests. No install, edit, export, GPU benchmark, format matrix, or project round trip was performed.
