Choose a package

Windows portable destination or Linux extracted application

The Windows executable still uses a setup flow that asks for a destination. Choose a writable folder so the browser can update. On Linux, extract the x86_64 archive and use its start-tor-browser.desktop launcher as documented.

The Linux tarball is not a DEB/RPM installer. Moving the application to removable media does not remove downloads or operating-system traces, and these platform-specific flows were not executed in this audit.

Check first launch separately from network connection

After verifying the exact package and detached signature, distinguish whether the application opens from whether it connects to Tor. The first-launch screen offers Connect or connection configuration; saved automatic connection settings change later launches.

A successfully staged package is not a successful Tor connection. If connection fails, use the publisher's connection troubleshooting for the actual network conditions and record that result separately from installation.

What Tor Browser does

Tor Browser is an open-source browser from the Tor Project that routes supported browser traffic through the Tor network. A destination generally sees a Tor exit relay rather than the user's direct address, but this is not an anonymity guarantee. Accounts, browser changes, downloaded or opened files, other applications, endpoint compromise, traffic correlation, and user behavior can disclose identity or activity. Installing extensions or changing anti-fingerprinting defaults can also make a browser more distinguishable.

This record identifies Tor Browser 15.0.22 packages for Windows x86_64 portable, macOS, and Linux x86_64 from the Tor Project distribution archive. The current publisher download page links each package and its detached.asc signature. This record does not provide a locally verified hash or signature result. The Tor Project verification guide identifies signing-key fingerprint EF6E286DDA85EA2A4BA7DE684E2C6E8793298290; users must obtain and verify the key and signature themselves. This audit did not perform that verification or run the packages.

The Windows item is explicitly the portable build, the macOS item is a DMG, and the Linux item is an upstream tarball rather than a distribution package. Tor connectivity is required to browse, reach onion services, obtain updates, and refresh network information. Session data clearing does not remove downloaded files, bookmarks, operating-system traces, malware, or activity outside Tor Browser.
