Choose Explorer integration or a portable folder

Use setup when you want the optional Explorer preview or search integration. Use the x64 ZIP for a separately extracted reader; keep SumatraPDF-settings.txt and its thumbnail cache with that folder if you intend to move its preferences.

Installed copies normally keep settings under the user’s local application data. The documented -appdata override changes the location; a ZIP does not establish that Windows or opened documents leave no other records.

Resolve an upgrade lock before retrying

Close the reader and any Explorer preview using its components before retrying a failed replacement. Keep a representative PDF or comic locally to check the selected reading workflow afterward.

The installation documentation also describes newer 3.7 packaging changes. Those later DLL details are not evidence of the contents of this recorded 3.6.1 package.

What Sumatra PDF does

Sumatra PDF 3.6.1 is an open-source Windows document reader with x64 and x86 installers plus an x64 portable ZIP. Its supported reading formats include PDF, ePub, MOBI, XPS, DjVu, CHM, CBZ, and CBR, but rendering depends on document features and this is not a full PDF editor. The project emphasizes a compact interface; this page makes no comparative speed, memory, or older-hardware claim.

The publisher documents that a portable copy stores SumatraPDF-settings.txt and its thumbnail cache beside the executable, while an installed copy normally uses the user's local application-data directory; the -appdata option can override the location. Portable therefore means an extracted deployment mode, not “no traces”: Windows recent items, crash data, temporary files, antivirus logs, and opened documents can still leave data elsewhere.

SyncTeX use requires a compatible editor/viewer workflow, and CHM or other active-content formats deserve the same untrusted-document precautions as any external file. Update checks and external links can use the network even though reading a local file does not require an account.

The project pages checked for this review did not expose a publisher checksum for these 3.6.1 packages. No installation, settings-trace capture, rendering comparison, signature inspection, or performance benchmark was performed.
