PhotoRec Overview
PhotoRec is a free, open-source file-recovery tool for Windows, macOS, and Linux, the companion to TestDisk, that recovers lost files by their content signatures rather than the file system. Because it looks for known file headers and structures directly on the storage device, it can recover photos, documents, videos, archives, and hundreds of other file types even when the file system is severely damaged or has been reformatted. This signature-based approach makes it very effective at salvaging individual files from memory cards, hard drives, and USB sticks after deletion or corruption. It supports a wide range of formats. Its full installer holds the complete application, so it sets up on a machine with no internet connection. You can narrow recovery to specific file types to speed up scans, and it writes recovered files to a separate, safe destination to avoid overwriting data.
