Recuva Overview
Recuva is a file-recovery tool for Windows from Piriform (the makers of CCleaner) that attempts to restore deleted files from hard drives, USB drives, memory cards, and other storage. When a file is deleted, its data often remains on the disk until overwritten; Recuva scans for these recoverable files and lets you restore them, with a deep-scan mode for harder cases and an indicator of how likely each file is to be recoverable. It can also securely overwrite files you want permanently gone. The free version handles most consumer recovery needs. It works on most file systems and can often recover from reformatted or damaged drives, and a wizard guides beginners through choosing a drive and file type, which makes basic recovery approachable for non-experts.
