What Kdenlive does

Kdenlive is a free, open-source non-linear video editor developed and maintained by the KDE community. It is licensed under the GPL, which means the source code is publicly available and the software costs nothing to use. It runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it one of the few cross-platform open-source video editors that supports all three major operating systems. At the core of Kdenlive is a multi-track timeline that supports an unlimited number of video and audio tracks, allowing users to build layered compositions without artificial constraints. The editor relies on FFmpeg for media handling, which gives it broad compatibility with widely used formats and codecs including MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WebM, and many audio formats. Rendered output can target a wide range of profiles and containers to suit different delivery requirements. Kdenlive includes a library of video effects and audio effects that can be applied to clips directly on the timeline. Keyframing is available for effects parameters, letting editors animate properties over time. Transitions can be added between clips, and the built-in title and subtitle tools allow on-screen text without requiring a separate application. Proxy editing is a standout workflow feature: Kdenlive can automatically generate low-resolution proxy files from high-resolution source footage so that editing remains responsive, then switches back to full-quality files at export time. Audio and video scopes — including a waveform monitor, vectorscope, and histogram — give editors a reference for color correction and audio levels. Automatic scene detection can split long recordings into individual clips based on scene changes, which is useful when working with raw footage from cameras. Keyboard shortcuts are fully configurable. This page provides the full offline standalone installer sourced directly from download.kde.org, the official KDE download server. Download only from the publisher's official domain to ensure the software is unmodified.
