mpv Overview
mpv is a free, open-source, cross-platform media player for Windows, macOS, and Linux, developed by the mpv contributors. It takes a minimalist approach: by default there is almost no on-screen interface, and the player is driven by keyboard shortcuts, configuration files, and scripts, which makes it a favorite among power users who want precise control. Built on FFmpeg, it plays an enormous range of audio and video formats, and its GPU-based video output supports high-quality scaling, color management, and frame interpolation for very clean playback. mpv is highly scriptable through Lua and JavaScript, so the community has built extensive add-ons for everything from on-screen menus to advanced playlist handling, and its behavior can be tuned in depth through a plain-text config file. It is also widely embedded in other applications as a playback engine. The full offline installer holds the complete application, so it sets up on a machine with no internet connection.
