Microsoft Excel Overview
Microsoft Excel is the industry-standard spreadsheet application for Windows and macOS, part of the Microsoft 365 / Office family, used for calculations, data analysis, modeling, and reporting. It offers a vast library of functions, formulas, pivot tables, charts, conditional formatting, data validation, and Power Query for importing and transforming data, plus macros and VBA for automation. Its XLSX format is the most common spreadsheet format, and co-authoring is supported when files are stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. Excel is distributed through Microsoft 365 (subscription) or a one-time-purchase Office release, installed via Microsoft's installer. Dynamic-array formulas and newer functions such as XLOOKUP have modernized how complex calculations are built and maintained.
