FreeMind Overview
FreeMind is a free, open-source mind-mapping application for Windows, macOS, and Linux, one of the original and most widely used free tools of its kind. Built on Java, it lets you quickly build branching mind maps to brainstorm, take notes, organize ideas, and outline projects, with fast keyboard-driven editing, folding of branches, icons, links between nodes, and the ability to attach notes and hyperlinks. Maps are saved in an open format and can be exported to formats like HTML and images. While its interface is dated compared with newer commercial tools, it remains a capable, no-cost option for mind mapping. As a single complete installer, FreeMind finishes setup on a machine that has no connection. Branches can be color-coded and styled, and a wide range of community-made maps and exporters extend what it can do. Use the link on this page to reach FreeMind's official FreeMind download.
