Microsoft Word Overview
Microsoft Word is the industry-standard word processor for Windows and macOS, part of the Microsoft 365 / Office family. It is used for everything from letters and reports to long, structured documents, with a deep toolset: styles and themes, templates, track changes and comments for collaboration, references and a table of contents, mail merge, and real-time co-authoring when documents are stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. Its DOCX format is the most widely used document format, and recent versions add AI-assisted writing tools. Word is distributed through Microsoft 365 (subscription) or as part of a one-time-purchase Office release, installed via Microsoft's installer. Recent versions add a focus mode, a built-in editor for grammar and clarity suggestions, and dictation for typing by voice.
